About the Organisation

Founded in 2014, KCDC upholds the rights and improves the lives of children with disabilities (CWDS) and their families in Uganda. With a team of over 100 staff, we deliver integrated services across four core areas:

  • Community-Based Rehabilitation: Monthly support for 1,000+ children through rehabilitation, caregiver training, and outreach in 27 health centres across western Uganda.
  • Inclusive Education: Through our Inclusive Education Hub and Model School (KIMS), we train educators and demonstrate inclusive practices in 18 partner schools.
  • Assistive Technology: Kyaninga Mobility designs and manufactures eco-friendly, locally made mobility aids like bamboo wheelchairs.
  • Livelihoods & Advocacy: We support caregivers and youth with disabilities through business skills training and income-generating opportunities.

Position Overview

Job Title: Speech and Language Therapist

Location: Fort Portal and Kasese, Uganda

To provide comprehensive assessment and speech and Language therapy intervention for children with disabilities and their families within outpatient clinics and community outreach into individual homes, schools and health centres. To help children improve their speech clarity, language comprehension and expression, and social communication skills, and also support children with eating and drinking difficulties. A key part of their role is working with families and other professionals, such as teachers and doctors, to create and implement a personalised therapy plan.

Field-Based Role: Serving Fort Portal and Kasese through clinics, home visits, schools, and health centres.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

Clinical Assessment & Intervention
  • To provide assessment and therapeutic intervention for children with speech, communication and feeding difficulties and their families within outpatient clinics and community outreach into individual homes, schools and health centers.
  • To use clinical reasoning, evidence-based practice, specialist skills, problem-solving and initiative to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
  • Formulating and delivering specialised speech and language therapy treatment programs based on evidence-based practice and treatment options.
Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain up-to-date clinical records in line with professional standards.
  • Provide quarterly reports on the progress of referrals, appointments and caseloads
  • Ensuring all reports are dealt with promptly, and all documentation is maintained accurately and up to date
Collaboration & Training
  • To liaise with other healthcare professionals, clients, parents and other relevant individuals professionally.
  • To provide education and training to colleagues, students, other healthcare and community workers, parents and caregivers.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, including physio, occupational therapists, Nutritionists, orthopaedic officers, social workers, special education teachers and administration and support staff.
Operational & Professional Development
  • To professionally respond to enquiries and referrals regarding speech and language therapy and other available services.
  • Check that all equipment is in good working order and maintain records of all items in
  • To manage and maintain your diary, including appointments, meetings and clinical observations, ensure effective communication throughout the organization.
  • To keep up to date with new techniques and technologies available for treating patients.
  • To educate patients and their caregivers about how to prevent and/or improve conditions.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Required qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Speech and Language therapy
  • 1-2 years of experience in speech and Language Therapy preferably in a nongovernmental organisation setting.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Highly motivated with a willingness to learn and develop
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • The ability to explain treatments simply to patients and their families
  • Have a genuine concern for the well-being and health of patients
  • Excellent proficiency in verbal and written English with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate in Rutooro, Lukhonzo, Runyankole or Rukiga would be beneficial
  • Flexible and adaptable attitude with a “can do” approach
  • Critical thinker with an ability to see “outside the box” with a proven ability to multitask and meet deadlines
  • Good computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite
  • Valid vehicle license is highly desirable
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
