Job Summary:
The Communications Specialist in the Communications Department will be in charge of putting the HFHU Communications Strategy into action.
The job includes helping with general communications, managing social media, creating content, telling stories, making the brand more visible, dealing with the media, and keeping track of project results to raise awareness and get more people involved with Habitat for Humanity Uganda's efforts.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Putting the communications strategy into action
- Make, review, and keep an eye on annual communications work plans and budgets
- Write management progress reports for communication activities
- Make a communications calendar for important events and activities
- Make campaign strategies that promote affordable housing, tenure security, and access to safe water services
- Build the technical skills of staff and partners so they can communicate effectively
- Make Concept Notes, Terms of Reference, and Contract agreements for companies that provide communications services.
Managing digital and social media
- Keep HFHU's website and social media accounts up to date on a regular basis
- Make things like posters, infographics, data sheets, and photo tales for social media.
- Keep track of media coverage and performance statistics.
Making content and telling stories
- Write articles, case studies, and testimony about program topics that are of interest to people
- Make and edit communication materials like images, videos, press releases, and publications
- Use multimedia technologies to help keep track of program activities.
Managing knowledge and writing down information inside the company
- Keep an orderly collection of communication materials
- Help put together and revise project reports and communication content
- Write and review HFHU Annual Reports, Calendars, Project Briefs, and Policy Statements.
- Lead the creation of the culture-in-development resource center
- Do field research and write reports
Visibility and Relations with the Media
- Find and pitch HFHU work to the media for coverage
- Run customized public campaigns to manage brand and visibility
- Work closely with the media to keep reputation risk low
- Fill out the bi-annual media reporting tool.
- Help organize and coordinate events that will get your brand noticed and align with your goals.
- Help with press interaction and spreading the word about your information goods.
Support for administration and multiple functions
- Work with programs and other teams to acquire information
- Go on field visits and help document what happens there
- Help with event planning, including seminars and media relations
Requirements and Experience:
- A bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, mass communication, or a related subject
- A master's degree in communications, journalism, or the social sciences is a plus.
- More than five years of experience in public relations, social marketing, journalism, or communications
- Previous work managing social media accounts or making multimedia material
- Knowledge of design, photography, and/or video editing tools (Canva, Adobe Suite)
- Familiar with style guides and editorial guide books
- Experience working with NGOs in the past
What you need to know and be good at:
- Good writing, editing, and storytelling skills
- Basic grasp of digital media tactics and communication tools
- Great in organizing and getting along with others
- Good at using Microsoft Office and social media sites
- Ability to go to field sites
- Love for community development and communication
