Job Summary
The Field Technician position is primarily field-based, serving as a critical link between Safe Water Now, Engineering, program implementation, and served communities by ensuring timely and quality repairs and maintenance of chlorine dispensers and ILC (In-Line Chlorination) devices in a designated area.
Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Perform field and office repairs on chlorine dispenser hardware, such as casings, tanks, and valves, to reduce hardware costs
- Execute timely and high-quality re-installations and maintenance of dispensers
- Collect and submit data on upgrades for every dispenser repair, maintenance, or re-installation
- Regularly report and support the engineering team and Area Coordinator on field issues arising from spot checks and maintenance of chlorine dispenser hardware
- Keep the Area Coordinator and engineering team updated on dispenser component performance, especially during trial tests of chlorine dispenser hardware
- Track chlorine dispenser hardware tested in the field by maintaining all documentation and providing monthly progress updates to the Area Coordinator
- Assist in assembling new hardware as needed
- Track parts and tools required for dispenser repairs or upgrades in the office or hub, notifying staff when reordering is needed
- Communicate new engineering advancements, improvements, or innovations to field teams, and vice versa
- Engage communities and local stakeholders in awareness and messaging to promote safe use of chlorine dispensers and prevent vandalism
- Support ongoing field office, hub, and satellite tasks, such as chlorine delivery, quality data collection and submission, and technology maintenance
- Manage, train, supervise, mentor, shadow, and coach community service assistants in their roles
- Manage and account for funds allocated for field work or engineering tasks in compliance with finance policy
- Wisely use assigned motorcycles, paying close attention to repair and maintenance costs
- Develop weekly work plans and field activity reports
- Assist with back-checks for ongoing tasks, both in-person and by phone
- Perform other tasks and responsibilities as directed by the Supervisor
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Chlorine device functionality rates
- Chlorine dispenser issues reported and resolved within 48 hours
- Timely and quality data collection, submission, and tracking
- Number of coaching sessions conducted and their impact on Community Service Assistants' performance
Qualifications, Education, and Competencies
- Certificate or diploma in Plumbing, Water Engineering, or a related technical field
- Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE/UBTEB) from a recognized vocational school
- 1–2 years of experience working with communities or social enterprises/NGOs
- At least 2 years of experience plumbing water supply systems, preferably in rural or community contexts
- Experience with chlorination systems, dosing equipment, or water treatment devices (advantageous)
- Basic understanding of water quality testing
- Ability to read and understand plumbing schematics and technical specifications
- Experience or certification in stock management (advantageous)
- Computer literacy
- Valid Class A driving license from a recognized driving school and prior motorcycle riding experience
- Fluency in English, Lugisu, and Lusoga; knowledge of other local languages is an advantage
