Heifer International, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, is implementing the Stimulating Agribusiness for Youth Employment (SAYE) project across 11 districts in the Busoga sub-region. Our goal is to improve the social and economic well-being of 250,000 youth (ages 16-35) by 2029, focusing on poultry, horticulture, oilseeds, dairy, and beef value chains. We are seeking three energetic and detail-oriented Data Assistants to join our Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) team in the Bugiri, Iganga, and Kamuli clusters.

Role: Data Assistant

Main Duties and Responsibilities

A. Data Collection

  • Support field staff and enumerators in using digital and paper-based data collection tools.
  • Assist with troubleshooting issues during field data collection.
  • Monitor field activities to ensure compliance with MEL protocols, quality standards, and ethical guidelines.
  • Document and report field challenges, best practices, and lessons learned.

B. Data Entry and Management

  • Enter, upload, and update field data promptly and accurately in SAYE project databases (e.g., MIS).
  • Maintain data entry logs to track progress and identify delays.
  • Participate in data verification and validation exercises, flagging issues for review.

C. Data Security and Quality Assurance

  • Ensure secure storage of physical and digital records in compliance with data protection policies.
  • Maintain backups and support data recovery planning.
  • Assist with quarterly Data Quality Assessments (DQAs) and collaborate with teams to address issues.

D. Reporting and Collaboration

  • Support the preparation of weekly, monthly, and quarterly MEL reports.
  • Participate in planning and progress review meetings.
  • Provide timely feedback to field teams on data-related issues.

Experience and Qualifications

Academic BackgroundDiploma or Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Quantitative Economics, Economics, Agriculture, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Information Technology, or a related field.
Experience1–2 years of experience in data entry, data management, or MEL in an NGO or development setting.
Technical Skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Familiarity with digital data collection tools (e.g., ODK, Kobo Toolbox).
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and integrity.
Soft Skills
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse teams and communities.
  • Adaptability and problem-solving skills in high-pressure environments.
Additional Advantages
  • Experience working with rural communities or youth programs.
  • Proficiency in English and at least one local language spoken in the Busoga region.
  • Strong analytical skills.
