The Country Director is a professional networker and alliance builder who builds and maintains high-level partnerships with donors government agencies private sector actors and civil society organizations to find new sources of financing and grow ChildFund's impact.
The Country Director is in charge of getting bigger more strategic grants and making ensuring they are done on schedule and to a high standard.
They do this by focusing on innovation growth and systems change They help to diversify the sources of income including non-traditional funding while expanding programs that make a difference and meet the changing needs of children and communities.
The job involves strategic control of a wide range of areas such as communications and advocacy managing partnerships delivering programs overseeing sponsorships administration and support managing enterprise risk reducing disaster risk and ensuring safety and security.
The Country Director works with partners and stakeholders to improve service delivery systems community structures and coordination platforms They also work to improve the organization's internal systems to make it more efficient accountable and resilient .

Required Experience and Education
- A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline is required but a master's degree in a relevant field is strongly preferred
- At least ten years of experience managing people or being in a senior management role in the development field
- Proven ability to manage funding from institutions and donations from individuals
- Proven experience in getting money from a variety of sources with a strong focus on pre-positioning smart networking and getting donors involved Business growth should take at least 60% of your time
- Worked with emergency programs and/or initiatives to help communities grow
Main Duties
- Strategic Portfolio Growth: Be in charge of establishing and keeping an operational portfolio that is flexible and has a big impact Make sure you have a good mix of high-quality local collaborations new programs and different ways to get money such as competitive grants corporate partnerships and local giving Make sure that locally led development is a top priority in the portfolio by giving national and community-based organizations more power and leadership Encourage ownership and long-term success by making decisions with everyone in mind and forming fair partnerships To get the best results for kids teens and communities be sure that all of your projects are in line with your goals and can last
- Excellence and new ideas in programs Lead the planning and implementation of programs that are based on research and follow ChildFund's fundamental principles and standards Include youth-led methods in the planning and execution of programs so that young people can have a real say in finding solutions to problems that affect their lives To make sure that the work is relevant effective and has a lasting effect encourage ongoing learning and flexible programming in important areas such as child protection monitoring evaluation research and learning (MERL) disaster risk reduction (DRR) gender and social inclusion and safety and security
- Grants and Project administration: Lead and oversee the processes for managing grants and projects with a focus on the strategic execution and administration of larger high-value grants Making sure that sponsored projects are carried out on time and to a high standard while also strictly following donor standards such as financial reporting programming deliverables and contractual commitments Work with internal teams and partners to improve grant management before and after the award lower risks and make sure that all projects meet accountability criteria
- Talent Leadership and Culture Building: Lead the strategic hiring onboarding and ongoing development of talent to create a team that is high-performing and dedicated to its objective Foster a high-performing inclusive and values-driven organizational culture that encourages excellence cooperation and accountability Work with the Country Office and partners to make it easier for young people to become leaders and grow Help young changemakers by supporting mentorship capacity building and innovation hubs Encourage good management mentoring and leadership development to help individuals and teams reach their full potential in line with ChildFund's aims and values
- Performance and Team Development: Lead coach and mentor your personnel to reach strategic goals and meet performance targets Create and keep a strong unified senior leadership team that encourages teamwork new ideas and a culture of accountability and quality throughout the Country Office
- External Representation and Advocacy: Use strategic advocacy and high-level involvement to make ChildFund the most important voice on children's issues in Uganda Speak for the organization with government officials donors international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) the media and other interested parties to make it more visible change policy and build stronger collaborations Support young people taking charge of national development and humanitarian efforts Make strategic partnerships that give young people a voice and change policy Use outside platforms and forums to help ChildFund's cause influence the way people talk about things in the country and make big changes for kids and teens
- Resource Mobilization and Fundraising: Lead strategic initiatives to mobilize resources to grow and manage a strong fundraising base Use strategic networking pre-positioning and relationship-building with key influencers funders and private sector actors to actively look for new financing options Encourage the establishment of local fundraising and business development projects to help programs last longer and make ChildFund's impact bigger
- Operational Stewardship: Make ensuring that financial human and physical resources are used wisely and managed strategically Work with Global Shared Services to provide excellent support in finance HR and IT which will improve operational efficiency and accountability
- Governance and Compliance: Keep strong internal controls in place to protect assets and make sure that you follow donor requirements national laws and your own organization's rules Follow the rules of locally led development by making sure that governance structures and compliance mechanisms give power to local actors and reflect the needs of the community Encourage a culture of honesty openness and responsibility in all areas of the business while also actively finding and reducing risks to safeguard the organization's effectiveness and reputation
- Knowledge and Learning: Encourage a culture of learning by creating and using knowledge products that make programs more effective and help in making strategic decisions Encourage learning exchanges between countries and around the world to make organizations stronger and have a bigger effect
- Emergency Response: Make sure that a complete disaster preparedness and emergency response plan is created kept up to date and updated on a regular basis Lead efforts to make organizations more prepared and resilient so that they can respond quickly in a coordinated way and effectively to situations that affect children and communities
- Safety and Security: Follow and enforce the organization's rules policies and procedures to keep people programs and assets safe Be in charge of creating a culture of proactive safety and security risk management at the Country Office making sure that security trends are always being watched and acted on quickly Give enough resources to support safe program implementation and getting money back To fulfill ChildFund's duty of care you should encourage actions that promote the emotional and physical well of employees Make sure that your reaction to incidents is organized and in line with company standards by working closely with the global security team
- Safeguarding: Be aware of and ready to respond to any safeguarding hazards; learn and use the necessary knowledge and skills to follow ChildFund's safeguarding policy and procedures Encourage good safeguarding procedures in all areas of the business by making sure that everyone behaves properly reports infractions right away and has a culture of accountability Take charge of putting in place remedial steps which could include disciplinary legal or other actions in response to any violations Work with the right teams to follow up on what you find and make sure to review policies procedures and protocols on a regular basis to find and fix any gaps or weaknesses Make sure that all staff partners and program participants feel safe and respected in the workplace
Skills Needed
- You should be able to speak and write English very well
- A thorough understanding of Uganda's child protection and child-focused programs environment and cultural context
- Showed a high level of skill in ChildFund's core competency areas such as teamwork communication results oriented decision making resilience and digital literacy
- Showed a high degree of skill in ChildFund's Leadership Competency areas such as strategic leadership people leadership partnership change management and design thinking
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a wide range of contributors such as government agencies UN bodies (including UNFPA UNICEF and WFP) and other important stakeholders
- A deep awareness of and sensitivity to the country's cultural dynamics as well as the capacity to use historical context for strategic planning and working with people from other countries
- Able to explain ChildFund's worth and show how it has made a difference while also encouraging a collaborative credit-sharing approach to building partnerships
- A strong track record of being able to build teams and mentor others with a focus on getting to know and developing staff holding people accountable creating a culture of high performance and encouraging courteous and inclusive workplace behavior
- A business-oriented approach to leadership that lets you find opportunities encourage new ideas and make a lasting difference
- Excellent presentation and narrative skills to clearly explain program results the effect on the organization and the strategic vision to different groups of people
