Job Summary
The Intern – Marketing and Communications role at the British Council in Kampala is designed to empower individuals from underprivileged backgrounds, including those with disabilities, to gain essential skills and experience for career advancement. The intern will support the British Council Sudan and Uganda teams in promoting events, products, and services to internal and external audiences.
This role offers a unique perspective on operational and program areas, addressing diverse audience needs in local, regional, and international contexts, and contributes to the organisation’s mission of positive societal impact.
Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities
Planning and Developing Assets
- Attend program team meetings in Uganda and Sudan to identify priorities, upcoming events, and promotional opportunities
- Review the existing library of assets and create a calendar to track events and activities
- Develop engaging written and visual assets, such as social media posts, impact stories, and summary publications, to drive stakeholder engagement
Website and Social Media
- Create, upload, and share proposed social media content with Marketing Managers, collaborating with the hub team via the content tool (Airtable)
- Monitor social media campaigns (if applicable) and compile engagement analytics
- Support digital initiatives in Uganda and Sudan, including promoting impact stories, case studies, and existing/new content
Event Support
- Assist in organizing and promoting online and in-person events, such as webinars
- Prepare event materials, including fliers and name badges, as needed
- Support event logistics and provide on-site assistance during events
Market Research
- Conduct basic competitive research to inform marketing strategies
Administration and Coordination
- Maintain marketing databases, such as mailing lists and media contacts
- Update schedules for reports, calendars, and content publishing
- Support internal communication coordination within the team
Brand and Reputation Monitoring
- Monitor media coverage, online sentiment, and mentions of the organisation
Collaboration and Learning
- Engage with other departments to gather information for projects and campaigns, identifying opportunities to promote work internally
- Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute ideas for future campaigns
- Stay updated on best practices in digital marketing and communications

- Priority given to individuals with disabilities who are new to the workforce or have been out of work for a while, and those from low-income backgrounds with limited access to education, employment, or resources

Additional Requirements
- Proof of identity and eligibility to work in Uganda (candidates must confirm their legal work status; visa support is not guaranteed and should be verified with local HR)
- Applicants may need to answer pre-screening questions and provide supporting documents to verify socio-economic status or disability for fair access consideration
- Knowledge of Arabic is an advantage but not required
