Job Summary

The Safety & HAZMAT Officer will report to the Manager of Safety & Security or their designee. They will be in charge of making sure that safety rules and hazardous materials (HAZMAT) management are followed correctly at all of the University, hospitals, and outreach clinics in Uganda 

This is done in accordance with regulatory, accreditation, and other best practice standards to make sure that the facility is safe and healthy for patients, staff, students, contractors, visitors, and anyone else who is legally present.

 He or she will do yearly risk assessments on all of Uganda's campuses and properties and give all the necessary training for safety, fire safety, and hazardous materials

Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Do frequent safety checks, audits, and full risk assessments on all of AKU's properties in Uganda
  • Take part in risk assessments before, during, and after construction, and put in place ways to reduce those risks to make sure that safety rules are followed at all stages of building and restoration projects
  • Create, teach, and assess training programs on Occupational Health & Safety (OSHA compliance), Fire Safety, and HAZMAT handling that are specific to employees, contractors, and stakeholders
  • Keep HAZMAT inventory and safety data sheets (SDS) up to date, and make sure that hazardous materials are stored, labeled, transported, and disposed of correctly
  • Quickly and effectively deal with fires, chemical spills, exposure events, and other safety situations, including making sure that emergency action procedures are in place
  • Make sure that safety standards are followed according to AKU policies, national rules (such those from the Ministry of Health and the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE)), and foreign accreditations like JCIA
  • Look into accidents and near-misses, write reports, and suggest ways to fix the problems
  • Help out with and take part in safety committees, policy evaluations, and drills for being ready for emergencies

Qualifications, Education, and Skills

RequirementDetails
EducationA bachelor's degree in public or environmental health, environmental science, fire science, occupational safety and health, or a similar science-based field

Other Qualifications and Skills: 
At least three years of experience in a similar job, particularly with experience with safety committees or how to handle trash 
Basic research skills and knowledge of safety rules and standards 
Strong attention to detail and the ability to think analytically 
Great communication and problem-solving skills 
A proactive and cooperative way to handle safety 
You must be able to use Microsoft Outlook well and work well with others in a team
