Position Summary:
MUWRP is looking for a skilled and motivated Laboratory Technician to help run the laboratory hub at Luweero General Hospital. The main focus will be on HIV and related disorders diagnostic services. The person in this job will be in charge of making sure that referred patient samples are processed correctly, that test results are released on time, and that laboratory safety and quality assurance criteria are met.

Job Title: Laboratory Technician - Hubs
Organization: Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP)
Location: Luweero General Hospital, Luweero, Uganda
Position Number: MUWRP/01/10/2025
Length of Contract: 1 year (may be renewed)

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Do phlebotomy and provide patients clear instructions on how to collect samples
- Keep accurate records of all samples obtained and received in both physical and electronic form
- Check the quality and accuracy of the work every day and do regular maintenance on the lab equipment
- Keep records of equipment calibration, validation, and preventative maintenance
- Use and stick to Laboratory Quality Management Systems
- Do diagnostic tests like:
- Microscopy (malaria, parasites, urine, stool, ZN smears)
- Automated testing (hematology, serum chemistries, CD4 counts)
- GeneXpert multiplex testing (TB, HPV, EID, Viral Load POC)
- HIV-related diagnostics (CrAg, TB LAM, rapid HIV tests)
- Blood grouping and cross-matching
- Let your boss and the doctors know about important lab results right away
- Fill out all the forms for the lab report and send the results in private
- Take part in activities for External Quality Assurance
- Keep an eye on the levels of lab supplies and work with the Lab Manager
- Make sure that safety rules are followed in the lab and that the workspace is well-organized
- Keep patient and lab data private
Qualifications and Work History:
- A diploma in medical laboratory technology from an accredited school
- A license from the Allied Health Professionals Council (AHPC)
- At least two years of experience working in a busy diagnostic lab
- Extra training or experience in testing areas that are applicable (a plus)
Personal Traits and Physical Needs:
- Good at talking and writing
- Able to handle and carry lab supplies
- Willing to live in Luweero or Nakasongola permanently
- Willing to go regularly to PEPFAR sites funded by MUWRP
