Job Summary

The Resilient Design, Soil and Water Engineer Graduate Trainee will support the implementation of engineering and resilience design practices, focusing on field activities, community engagement, and high-quality project delivery in Yumbe, Uganda. The role involves working on large-scale and household resilience design projects to enhance soil health, biodiversity, and water conservation, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.

Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement soil and water management practices and resilience designs to improve soil health, biodiversity, and water conservation
  • Use drawing applications (e.g., AutoCAD, ArchiCAD) to create designs, drawings, and Bills of Quantities (BOQs) for infrastructure projects
  • Conduct assessments to identify soil and water resource management needs in target communities
  • Develop detailed project plans, including bioswales and micro-dams, for soil protection and water harvesting
  • Oversee construction of soil and water management structures, ensuring compliance with designs and quality standards
  • Provide technical guidance to project teams and contractors during activity implementation
  • Promote environmentally and climate-friendly farming practices to enhance productivity with minimal environmental impact
  • Create training materials, content, and resources for staff, community members, partners, and stakeholders
  • Conduct regular field visits to monitor project sites, block farms, and households, providing hands-on technical support
  • Submit timely reports to the supervisor, adhering to agreed guidelines and deadlines

Qualifications, Education, and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, or a related field (graduated within the last 2 years)
  • Experience working with rural communities and promoting environmentally sustainable practices
  • Proficiency in GIS applications, AutoCAD, and ArchiCAD
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and report-writing skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders
  • Fluent in English; knowledge of local languages is an advantage
  • Experience working in refugee camps or host communities is an advantage
