Job Summary

The primary role of this position, which reports to the Credit Underwriting Manager, is to objectively assess the risk of all loans and make decisions that adhere to Absa's policies and procedures

Tasks, Roles, and Responsibilities

Responsibility; Reviewing loan applications:

  • Review the application according to the Policy guidelines and make the right choice (approvals, declines, pauses, and rejections) within the limits of your discretion
  • Put the outcome of the loan application on the system and the usual template
  • Check that the loan documents include a signed offer letter with an offer amount that is within range
  • Recommend all approved secured loans for security perfection and send out offer letters
  • For secured loans, approve the loan, send an offer letter, and suggest that the security be perfected
  • For approved, stamp and sign, then update the system and the assessment form before sending them to the receipt desk
  • Send any offer letters to the receipt desk so they can be sent to the branch

Responsibility: Control:

  • Before giving out any loans, make sure they all meet the product lending requirements
  • Make sure that all loan applications are entered into the system
  • Send all loan applications that look suspicious to the fraud team for further examination
  • Do the snap checks that your line manager tells you to do
  • Make sure that all paperwork (loan applications and supporting documents), tools (Assessors stamp), and passwords for all systems are kept safe
  • Make sure that the information submitted into the system and the standard template (assessment form) is correct at every step of the assessment process

Being responsible: Customer Service:

  • Answer questions from different stakeholders about the loan assessment process within the time limits set
  • Follow the deadlines in the service level agreements (SLAs) to make sure that loan processing is swift and efficient

Being responsible means helping the team:

  • Share the best practices and any problems that came up during the assessment process
  • When needed, help other members of the front-end team and the loam processing team to keep the business running and reach its goals

Risk, governance, and rules:

  • Make sure that all tasks and operations are done in full accordance with the rules set by the Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Framework, Absa's internal policies, and the law Know how to handle risks and risk events (incidents) that are important to the job

Qualifications, Education, and Skills

RequirementDetails
EducationYou need a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, business administration, or another field related to business
ExperienceThree years of experience in credit evaluation, credit underwriting, credit analysis, and credit sanctioning

Preferred:  
A master's degree, like an MBA  
Certification for Credit Analysts (CCA)  
Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)  
Certified Risk Professional (CRP)  
Training in Moody's or S&P credit risk  
Requirements for training that are specific to the job:  
Standards for knowing your customer (KYC)  
Handling grievances, TCF, and customer service  
Sanctions and stopping money laundering  
Awareness of information security  
Keeping track of records  
Privacy of Data  
Being aware of fraud  
Improving performance  
Policies and processes for Absa retail lending from start to finish  
Knowledge of retail asset products  
Analysis of Credit  
Preferred:  
Credit Analysis Certification Training from any school that is well-known  
Skills and abilities in technology:  
Being able to look at balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements is a skill in financial statement analysis  
Credit Risk Analysis: Knowing how credit risk cycles work, how to grade risk, and how to evaluate a borrower  
Loan structuring: Knowing the conditions of the loan, the covenants, and how to evaluate collateral  
Understanding of rules and regulations: knowing about lending rules and how to follow them (e.g. FIA, IFRS, Basel III)  
Knowledge of financial software and tools, such as Excel (including formulas and pivot tables), credit analysis software like Moody's Risk Calc, credit assessment tools, and loan origination systems  
Analytical thinking: The capacity to read data and make good decisions  
Paying attention to detail means making sure that credit evaluations and paperwork are correct  
Communication skills: You need to be able to write and speak clearly and professionally for loan memos and presentations to stakeholders  
Making decisions: Sure of making lending decisions based on data  
Time management: the ability to handle several applications at once and achieve deadlines even while under pressure
