Job Purpose

Lead the modernization and management of mechanical assets and operations (excluding road service vehicles, civil engineering plant, and floating craft). Drive digital transformation, implement predictive maintenance, and ensure rail transport operations are safe, sustainable, and cost-effective.

Main Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Support URC’s vision, contribute to the Corporate Plan, foster innovation, and drive long-term transportation projects.
  • Asset Management: Align engineering work with green transportation goals for sustainable operations.
  • Financial Management: Develop and manage budgets, optimize costs, and leverage KPIs and performance dashboards for decision-making.
  • Smart Engineering Policies: Establish policies incorporating IoT, AI-based diagnostics, eco-friendly procedures, and digital documentation.
  • Digitalized Safety & Operational Standards: Create safety protocols meeting international standards, utilizing automation and remote monitoring.
  • Smart Workshop & Locomotive Operations: Integrate predictive maintenance, sensor-based systems, digital twins, lean manufacturing, and CMMS/ERP systems.
  • Team Leadership: Foster a culture of learning through competency-based training and utilize HR analytics for performance evaluations.
  • Modernized Procurement & Inventory: Collaborate with PPDU to implement digital procurement platforms and just-in-time inventory systems.
  • Advanced Quality Assurance: Implement real-time quality checks using barcodes or RFID, and apply TQM and Kaizen principles.
  • Sustainable Plant Maintenance: Utilize green technology, condition-based maintenance, and energy-efficient retrofitting.
  • Innovation in Products & Materials: Leverage 3D printing, composites, and recyclable materials for cost-effective part redesign.
  • Efficient Train Operations & Response Systems: Implement smart signaling, GPS tracking, automatic incident reporting, and real-time monitoring.
  • High-Quality Engineering Design: Use CAD, simulation tools, and BIM to meet local and international standards.
  • Performance-Based Reporting: Deliver reports showcasing innovation and environmental performance through KPIs and data visualizations.
  • Special Transformation Initiatives: Lead carbon reduction, automation, and cross-border locomotive compatibility efforts.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Transport Technology, or Industrial Systems from a recognized institution.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Registered member of the Uganda Engineers Registration Board and IUPE.
  • Minimum of 10 years of mechanical engineering experience, including 5 years in senior management within a medium- to large-sized organization.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Excel, Power BI, Access, Word, PowerPoint, ERP, and CMMS applications.
  • Knowledge of green transportation technologies, including hybrid, electric, and hydrogen locomotives.
  • Proven leadership in innovation, budgeting, team development, and strategic planning.
  • Experience in change management, digital transformation, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Age limit: Below 55 years.
