Job Purpose
The role of the Principal Mechanical Engineer is to ensure the availability, reliability, and safety of rolling stock and all other mechanical assets. This includes strategic planning, operational execution, and performance oversight to guarantee smooth and efficient railway operations.

Strategy & Management
Promote URC’s vision and culture.
Contribute to strategic and operational plans.
Manage sectional budgets and staff deployment.
Operations
Ensure locomotives and rolling stock are ready for service.
Coordinate with Command and Control for schedule adherence.
Oversee preventive maintenance and manage spares inventory.
Safety & Compliance
Lead accident investigations and corrective actions.
Monitor fuel usage and ensure compliance with safety and environmental guidelines.
Innovation
Champion the adoption of modern mechanical systems and technology.
Qualifications and Experience

Details
Education
Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
Mandatory: Master’s Degree in Mechanical or Transportation Engineering.
Professional
Registered Engineer with the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) or equivalent.
Experience
Minimum of 8 years in mechanical engineering.
At least 4 years in a senior role in the rail or transport sector.
Age
Must be under 50 years old.
Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes
Leadership:Strong leadership, supervisory, and mentoring skills.
Technical: Expertise in rolling stock, CMMS, IoT for asset management, and ERP platforms.
Analytical: Proficiency in data analysis, report writing, decision-making, and crisis management.
Interpersonal:Strong team-building and interpersonal skills.
Compliance:Knowledge of ESG standards and environmental regulations.
Resilience:Ability to work under pressure and manage cross-functional teams.
