Job Summary

The Shop Assistant is responsible for supporting daily shop operations, including receiving merchandise, weighing, icing, cleaning, preparing customer orders, and ensuring customer satisfaction The role ensures smooth, accurate, and efficient shop operations, contributing to sales goals and high-quality customer service while adhering to safety and hygiene standards

Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the shop’s performance by proposing initiatives to boost sales and participating in sales-driven activities
  • Ensure excellent customer service in store appearance, fish display, stock ordering, SKU arrangement, and sales
  • Address or escalate customer concerns, securing satisfactory solutions for both Yalelo and customers
  • Receive stock supplies and manage inventory, ensuring fridges are always stocked to meet customer needs
  • Conduct regular quality checks on fish, ensuring proper handling, storage, processing, and packing, and enforce correct icing techniques to maintain freshness
  • Act as the primary custodian of the YU red stock SOP in the shop
  • Develop knowledge of fish products, including new offers, and share it confidently with customers and colleagues
  • Take and prepare customer orders, including packing and entering transactions into the POS
  • Handle banking of sales revenue, including cash reconciliations and meeting change requirements
  • Assist the shop manager with cash register operations, sales recording in the POS, correct pricing, inventory control, customer receipting, and end-of-day stock reconciliations
  • Maintain high hygiene standards for all shop facilities and equipment to meet food safety regulations, ensuring cleanliness and neatness
  • Perform administrative tasks to support smooth shop operations, including timely report submission
  • Adhere to health and safety rules, reporting concerns or incidents to the Supervisor or relevant staff
  • Regularly inspect shop equipment and premises, such as fridges, POS, and weighing scales, to ensure safety and functionality
  • Follow Workstream procedures, Retail SOPs, and Policies to ensure compliance
  • Attend scheduled training sessions to enhance knowledge and skills
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Supervisor

Key Performance Indicators and Deliverables

  • Meeting the shop’s monthly sales goal
  • Meeting the monthly goal of a 0.5% reduction in stock
  • Product safety, excellent customer service, and customer satisfaction
  • Few customer complaints
  • Always maintaining hygiene standards
  • No major or fatal safety accidents

Qualifications, Education, and Skills

RequirementDetails
EducationA diploma or equivalent in Business Administration or a related discipline
At least a Credit in Mathematics at UCE and a Principal Pass in Economics or Entrepreneurship Education at UACE
ExperienceTwo years of experience in fish processing, handling, or a similar sector is a plus

Skills and Abilities:
Good customer care skills and ability to manage customers
A good understanding of English and local languages
Must be neat and accurate
Willing to work long hours when needed
Able to work in a multicultural environment
Ability to follow detailed instructions and work effectively
Knowledge of safety protocols and dedication to maintaining hygiene standards
Attention to detail in handling, sorting, grading, and packing fish
Willingness to learn and adapt to different processing techniques
Good communication skills and a positive work attitude
