Job Summary
The Construction Manager (Senior Manager Construction - OnsCon) at McDermott will oversee department planning, manage multiple teams, and ensure project execution aligns with financial and operational goals. The role requires expertise in construction, problem-solving, and leadership to address complex technical, operational, and organizational challenges.
Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Ensure timely project completion within budget and scope
- Execute the construction plan, adjusting as needed to meet time and cost objectives
- Develop and implement effective construction execution strategies
- Oversee safety, quality, client interface, operations, cost, and schedule, focusing on labor productivity
- Act as the primary business manager for the project
- Foster a construction HSSE culture emphasizing safety and environmental awareness
- Implement mobilization plans
- Provide input on constructability during the design phase
- Create a construction organizational plan aligned with Project Documents and Execution Plan
- Assess site conditions and special requirements for upcoming projects
- Ensure direct reports understand the Project Execution Plan and construction requirements
- Direct and coordinate all on-site construction operations and support departments (e.g., field management, quality, safety, material management, procurement, construction engineering, HR, business services, industrial relations, facility turnover)
- Monitor project changes and update plans to ensure compliance with construction requirements
- Coordinate labor, equipment, and material availability to execute the construction plan
- Ensure construction work adheres to budget and timeline constraints
- Validate field estimates and schedules for accuracy
- Resolve operational issues and troubleshoot as needed
- Ensure compliance with construction procedures
- Control scope creep by documenting and approving change orders before additional work begins
- Monitor contractors’ field work for compliance with cost, quality, and schedule terms
- Track costs, schedules, progress, and productivity, addressing negative trends
- Assess risks of business interruptions at the site
- Inform management of changes impacting profit, schedule, costs, client relations, or interdepartmental dynamics
- Approve and implement the Construction Quality Management Plan
- Collaborate with the project team to establish the project timeline
- Approve and process change orders for additional work outside the original scope
- Maintain chronological records of project history, including meeting minutes and communications
- Document all significant instructions given to or received from the project team or client
- Conduct weekly meetings to discuss project status and safety
- Ensure transparent communication between McDermott and the client for strong relationships
- Implement, enforce, and monitor compliance with McDermott’s policies and procedures
- Ensure staff understand their roles and responsibilities for policy compliance
- Ensure timely completion of all required training for self and teams
Qualifications, Education, and Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent field experience
- 15 to 20 years of experience in industrial construction projects with expertise in construction planning
- Previous site experience, including work planning, with advanced knowledge of precise work planning processes
- Familiarity with Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) as a project management strategy and project lifecycle stages
- Strong communication and presentation skills to convey complex concepts
- Advanced MS Office skills, particularly in Excel and Access
- Experience implementing and maintaining MDR procedures and standards
- Proven leadership skills and ability to influence workplace dynamics
- Advanced knowledge of construction planning and execution
- Strong attention to detail with a proven track record in meeting deadlines, problem-solving, and troubleshooting
- Energetic, positive, and enthusiastic with a can-do attitude
- Respected for strong work ethic, integrity, and professionalism
- Thorough understanding of WorkFace Planning processes
- Comprehensive knowledge of contract terms
