Job Summary:

The Research Officer in Animal output will organize, design, and carry out research, then share the results to improve sustainable agricultural output. This job is all about improving livestock science in Uganda's agriculture sector through new research methods and solutions based on evidence.

About NARO:

The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) is Uganda's top public organization in charge of coordinating, producing, and sharing agricultural research that supports sustainable development, food security, and better living conditions. The National Agricultural Research Act of 2005 set up NARO as a center of scientific excellence that drives agricultural innovation across Uganda through specialized research institutes and partnerships.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct research projects in animal production
  • Do field and lab research in livestock science
  • Share study results with stakeholders and the scientific community.
  • Create methods for producing animals that are good for the environment.
  • Work with research teams on initiatives that cross disciplines.
  • Make sure that research methodologies and experimental designs are followed.
  • Get and look at information about the nutrition and productivity of animals.
  • Publish research results in journals that other experts have reviewed.
  • Write up research and technical reports
  • Help junior researchers and technical workers learn.
  • Help come up with research proposals
  • Talk to farming communities to spread the word about research
  • Keep an eye on and assess the results of research projects.
  • Help make rules for raising animals
  • Take care of research tools and buildings

Requirements and Skills:

  • A bachelor's degree in agriculture (with a focus on animal science) or veterinary medicine
  • A master's degree in livestock science or a similar discipline
  • Specialization in Veterinary Medicine, Livestock Nutrition, or Livestock Production
  • At least three years of relevant experience in research on animal production
  • Experience working in a well-known research organization
  • PhD degree (a plus)
  • Articles published in peer-reviewed journals (a plus)
  • Maximum age: 40 years

  • Developing feed for livestock and making sure they get the right nutrition
  • Managing animal health and diseases
  • Improving breeding and genetics
  • Animal welfare and management; sustainable production systems;
  • Value chain growth
  • Smart ways to raise cattle that are good for the environment

Skills in Technology:

  • Designing and carrying out research
  • Being good at using statistical analysis software
  • Animal science lab techniques
  • Data collection and administration, scientific documentation, the process of publishing research, and methods for field experimentation
