Job Summary:
The Research Officer for Food Science and Post-Harvest Technology will do research to find better ways to store, process, and preserve food. The goal of the function is to cut down on losses after harvest, improve the safety and nutritional quality of food, and add value to Uganda's agricultural products.
About NARO:
The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) is the main government agency in Uganda that directs and carries out agricultural research. Our goal is to create and spread better technologies and information that help farmers work more efficiently, add value to their crops, and use resources in a way that is good for the environment and the economy.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and carry out research studies on how to handle, preserve, and process crops once they have been harvested.
- Create and test new technologies that can make perishable agricultural goods last longer on the shelf.
- Look at the safety and nutritional value of both raw and processed foods.
- Do lab tests and tests on a small scale to make new food products.
- Work with farming communities and agro-processors to find problems that come up after harvest and spread the word about how to solve them.
- Use the right statistical tools to gather, organize, and analyze study data.
- Write scientific articles, technical reports, and policy briefings based on what you find in your research.
- Help come up with project suggestions and get money for study.
- Oversee and teach technical workers and junior researchers how to do their jobs in the lab and in the field.
- Keep food science lab equipment in good shape and make sure it works correctly.
Skills, experience, and qualifications:
Important Requirements:
- A bachelor's degree in food science and technology, nutrition, or a similar discipline.
- A master's degree in food science, post-harvest technology, or food chemistry.
- At least three years of relevant experience in food science research or a related agro-processing field.
- Hands-on expertise with food analysis, preservation methods, and safety rules in the lab.
- Knowledge of how to use data management and statistical analysis tools.
- Good communication skills for preparing reports and working with stakeholders.
- You must be at least 40 years old when you apply.
