Job Summary:

The Research Officer–Plant Breeding will be in charge of scientific work to make important food and cash crops better genetically. This job includes creating and carrying out breeding projects, describing plant genetic resources, and creating new varieties with better features including higher yield, disease resistance, and the capacity to adapt to different climates.

About NARO:

The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) is a government agency that is responsible for guiding, coordinating, and doing strategic agricultural research for the country's growth. NARO brings new technology and answers to Uganda's rural communities through a network of specialized institutes. These technologies and solutions help the economy thrive, improve nutrition, and give people more power.

Important Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and run full plant breeding projects.
  • Choose, hybridize, and evaluate crop lines in the field.
  • Use molecular breeding methods to quickly produce new traits.
  • Gather, study, and make sense of genetic and phenotypic data.
  • Take care of germplasm collections and make sure they are properly described.
  • Get scientific papers ready to be published in well-known journals.
  • Write project proposals, technical reports, and requests for funding.
  • Work with research partners from around the world and in your own country.
  • Oversee and guide junior staff and field technicians.
  • Plan and take part in farmer field days and workshops for stakeholders.
  • Help with the multiplication and spread of better seeds before they are released.
  • Make sure that research fields and lab equipment are kept up.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

Important Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture, Biotechnology, or a related field.
  • A Master's degree in Plant Breeding, Genetics, or Molecular Biology.
  • At least three years of hands-on experience in a plant breeding research environment.
  • Proven ability in experimental design, data analysis, and statistical software.
  • Strong understanding of crop physiology and genetics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • You have to be no older than 40 when you apply.
