Job Summary:

The Senior Principal Research Officer will be in charge of Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and will lead the way in that subject. This senior position is in charge of leading high-impact, multi-disciplinary research programs, getting a lot of financing, and establishing national policy to help people adapt to climate change and promote sustainable farming methods.

About NARO:

The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) is the main government body in Uganda that is in charge of advising, doing, and promoting agricultural research. Our job is to create and share technologies and information that will make farming more productive, protect resources for future generations, and make the lives of Ugandans better.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Give visionary leadership to the creation and execution of NARO's Climate-Smart Agriculture research program.
  • Be in charge of designing, submitting, and managing big research funding bids that involve more than one university.
  • Teach and help mid-level and junior research personnel learn more about CSA methods.
  • Make and keep strategic partnerships with foreign research institutions, government agencies, and development partners.
  • Speak with NARO at important national and international meetings, where you will share research results to help shape policy.
  • Make sure that the administration and reporting of large research initiatives are in line with the aims of the business and the country.
  • Push for the publishing of high-quality research in scientific publications that are peer-reviewed and have a big impact.
  • Be in charge of making CSA technologies and practices that may be used by farmers and other stakeholders.
  • Give expert advice to government departments on how to adapt to and reduce the effects of climate change in agriculture.

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:

Important Requirements:

  • A PhD in Environmental Science, Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, or an area that is quite similar and focuses on climate change.
  • At least eight (8) years of research experience after getting a PhD, with at least five (5) years in a leadership role as a Principal Research Officer.
  • A history of getting and managing competitive research grants worth at least $15 million.
  • A long list of published works, with at least 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals, some of which were first or corresponding authors in journals with an Impact Factor greater than 3.0.
  • Proven ability to lead big research teams that include people from different fields and institutions.
  • Proof that you have worked as an advisor on national or international technical committees connected to climate change or agriculture.
  • You must be no older than 55 when you apply.

  • A lot of knowledge about the agricultural landscape in Uganda and East Africa and the problems it faces because of the weather.
